Ana Costa is the founder of Anahata Yoga - a school registered by the Yoga Alliance. The Anahata Yoga Studio offers classes, workshops, and teacher training programs in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California.

The Iyengar method of Yoga is initially learnt through the in-depth study of asanas (posture) and pranayama (breath control). Mr Iyengar has systematised over 200 classical yoga Asanas and 14 different types of Pranayamas (with variations of many of them) from the simple to the incredibly difficult. These have been structured and categorised so as to allow a beginner to progress surely and safely from basic postures to the most advanced as they gain flexibility, strength and sensitivity in mind, body and spirit.

Jivamukti means “liberation while living.” This modern style of yoga emerged in 1984 from one of New York City’s best-known yoga studios. Founders David Life and Sharon Gannon incorporated their study of ashtanga yoga with Shri K. Pattabhi Jois with spiritual teachings, placing special emphasis on how to apply yogic philosophy to daily life. They have trained many teachers who have brought this style of yoga to studios and gyms, predominantly in the U.S.

Jnana means wisdom or discernment. Jnana yoga is the path of wisdom and jnana meditation is many-faceted. The main purpose of jnana meditation is to withdraw the mind and emotions from perceiving life and oneself in a deluded way so that one may behold and live in attunement with Reality, or Spirit. One principal way that the "jnani," the yogi of discernment, meditates is to patiently release or put aside all thoughts and feelings until the luminous glow of the soul dawns in the mind and heart and is allowed to do a work of transformation and enlightenment within the rapt meditator.

TriYoga is a complete and revolutionary system based in ancient Yoga. Experience the kundalini-inspired sequenced flow of yogasana (postures) synchronized with pranayama (rhythmic breath) and mudra (focus). The result is increased energy ... physically, mentally, and spiritually. This gives the mental clarity to manifest one's life with greater awareness.

Kripalu Yoga is an interplay of body, mind and energy. Within the physical body is a subtle flow of rhythmic, energy pulsations that we call prana, or life force. Even the most insignificant thought can disturb or block this flow of energy, creating imbalance or even disease. Every act of the body is invariably accompanied and strongly influenced by mental and emotional conditions, the awareness of which forms the more subtle aspect of the practice which includes physical postures, breathing techniques, deep relaxation and meditation.

A sincere spiritual seeker who follows the path of Kriya Yoga with love and devotion and a desire for spiritual growth can attain Self-realization - even within one lifetime. Kriya Yoga is non-sectarian. Its simple technique causes no hardship, requires no austerities, and suits aspiring householders as well as monks. From the principles of Karma Yoga, Kriya Yoga teaches that all action, kri, is done by the indwelling soul, ya. Continuous awareness of the power of the indwelling soul can transform all activity into worship. Awareness that the soul must inhale every breath leads to mind control and liberation. The Kriya technique emphasizes the relationship between breath and mind. The breath influences the mind and vice-versa. This reciprocal relationship reveals the secret of controlling the mind: "Breath control is self-control. Breath mastery is self-mastery. Breathlessness is deathlessness." The breathless state of samadhi is the realization of the Absolute.

The word kundalini literally means "the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved." It is a metaphor, a poetic way of describing the flow of energy and consciousness which already exists within each one of us. The practices enable you to merge with or "yoke" with the universal Self. This merging of individual consciousness with universal consciousness creates a "divine union" called "yoga." The technology of Kundalini Yoga applies its science to our bodies and minds, and is aimed at spirit which has no boundaries, no discrimination. Therefore it is for everyone. It is universal and nondenominational.

This is a yoga for householders, for people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. It gives results in the shortest possible time. It does not require you to leave your home, become an ascetic or sit in a cave. Kundalini Yoga is designed to give you "hands on" experience of your highest consciousness. It teaches a method by which you can achieve the sacred purpose of your life. In 1969, when Yogi Bhajan saw the condition the young people were in from having taken drugs, his compassion impelled him to teach them Kundalini Yoga. He knew it was the fastest way to heal their bodies and minds, and give them the spiritual awakening they were seeking.

“Para” means supreme, ancient, highest, the culmination of all effort. ParaYoga offers students of all levels access to the entire range and sacred power of Yoga. ParaYoga is based on the Six Gems©, ancient teachings that unlock “supreme” accomplishment in practice and life. The authoritative ancient texts of the Hatha Yoga tradition (like the “Hatha Yoga Pradipika” and “Gherand Samahita “) describe Yoga as a journey that culminates in sublime success and happiness. These teachings describe how through perfection of body, breath, mind, and spirit we access it.  When understood and practiced accordingly, practice become “Para” (the supreme, highest, or the place where our very best efforts culminate).

Power Yoga is directed at creating the highest level of energy, vitality and freedom. The only way to do this is to work with yourself, not against yourself. By working hard sensitively, we create an environment that's healing and that honors each individual, an environment that respects our boundaries and works within him or her. In this way, we create an atmosphere conducive to natural expansion and growth. We're not interested in pushing past our edge to get to a place where we've been brainwashed into thinking we need to be in order to have happiness!

Whatever modern-day, Western term is used for the description of yoga is far less important than the purpose of yoga, which is to practice the balance of body, mind and spirit. A solid power yoga program should help you feel more powerful, confident and balanced yet also simultaneously feel compassionate, fluid, gentle and kind. Basically, the term 'Power Yoga' was developed to help people understand that this style of Hatha (the physical kind) is a challenging practice with athletic movements that help you energetically flow from one pose to the next. But there's so much more to it than that!

Restorative Yoga is a form of "active relaxation." Fundamentally different from the energetic postures practiced in traditional hatha yoga, this class utilizes props (such as blankets, chairs, bolsters, straps, etc.) to alternately stimulate and relax the body to move toward balance. The purpose of a restorative practice is to create specific physiological responses that are beneficial to health and can reduce the effects of stress-related disease. Restorative yoga is open to all students and may be particularly beneficial for those recovering from injuries, with limited mobility, or with heavy workloads.
Restorative Yoga is suitable for everyone and the class is designed to support and inspire the practice of yoga in a focused and relaxed way with the emphasis on the principles of "dynamic relaxation" and the restoration of bodily functions. Props and therapeutic bols are used to facilitate the opening of the body, encouraging the ease in the approach of releasing tension and stress.

Svaroopa® yoga offers a significantly different paradigm in yoga poses. Our practice is both physical and more than physical. We specialize in the inner opening. Svaroopa® yoga poses release the tensions in the deepest layers of your body - the layers of muscles wrapped around your spine. This opens up conscious access to the ever-expanding inner realms of your own being. Rather than using hatha yoga as a sophisticated form of exercise, Svaroopa® yoga pursues the understanding of the deeper purposes of yoga: the understanding of your own essential nature.

The word SWARA  in Sanskrit, means sound  or  musical note; it also means the continuous flow of air through one nostril. And we all know that YOGA means union. So Swara Yoga is the science which is about the realization of cosmic consciousness, through the awareness or observation, then control or manipulation of the flow of breath in the nostrils. Swara yoga is an ancient tantric science which involves the systematic study  of the breath flow through the nostrils (or swara) in relation to the prevailing phases of the moon, time of day and direction . Although we think of 'pranayama' when we think of techniques associated with the breath, in Swara yoga, it is the association of the breath in relation to the activities or phases or positions of the sun, moon, planets, seasons, time of day, with the physical and mental conditions of the individual and then taking the appropriate action according to these subtle relations. For example, knowing the moon phases and checking the flow of your nostrils before you get out of bed in the morning and letting the corresponding foot be the first to touch the floor and make the first step, is a simple practice that ensures success in everything that happens for that day. The first foot to touch the ground will get the prevailing 'successful' flow of energy from the cosmos.

Viniyoga ™ (prefixes vi and ni plus yoga) is an ancient Sanskrit term that implies differentiation, adaptation, and appropriate application. The practices of Yoga provide the means to bring out the best in each practitioner. This requires an understanding of a person's present condition, personal potential, appropriate goals and the means available. Just as every person is different, these aspects will vary with each individual.

The American Viniyoga ™ Institute uses the term Viniyoga ™ to refer to an approach to Yoga that adapts the various means and methods of practice to the unique condition, needs and interests of each individual - giving each practitioner the tools to individualize and actualize the process of self-discovery and personal transformation.
